Postech Takes Center Stage in Science Growth
Monday, August 17, 2009 - Labels: pohang, POSCO - 4 Comments
Ask a South Korean what Pohang is, and he will undoubtedly say it is the center of the country’s iron and steel production. It was not this way amid the post-war poverty of Korea 30 years ago, however.
Pohang was a fishing port totally lacking in notoriety, except among Marines, for whom it was the starting point for some of the most unforgettably harsh trading, then in the mid-1960s it was forever transformed by the dedication of a gigantic steel mill by the Pohang Iron and Steel Co. (POSCO). With blithe disregard for the skepticism of Korean and foreign specialists, POSCO created the “economic miracle on the Hyongsan River” and turned Pohang into the center of Koren iron and steel production, reshaping it in the process.
