Pagodas and Panoramas
Sunday, December 6, 2009 - Labels: Bongcheonsan, five-story pagodas, Hajeommyeon, soektap - 1 Comments
Further down the bus line, in Hajeommyeon, there is another old but less-visited stone sculpture. It is a five-story pagodas, soektap, that was once a part of a Goryeo temple. The temple is gone but the pagoda stands hidden in the pine forest. If you do seek out pagodas, which is about a mile's walk from the main road past farmhouses, you might also want to scale Bongcheonsan, the high hill behind it. Hikers are promised a panoramic view of Imjin Estuary and an opportunity to stomp around the ruins of an old stone beacon tower. This tower supported one of 696 beacon fires lit during the Joseon dynasty to relay national security messages to Seoul. It was rendered obsolete when the telegraph was introduced in 1894.
