Centuries back, Itaewon was used as a stopover point for visitors to the capital. Then, during the Japanese Occupation, Japanese troops were housed here. These soldiers were replaced after the Korean War with American soldiers stationed at the adjacent Yongsan base, and Korean merchants moved into the thoroughfare to cater to the troops' needs.
