Korea's Amazing Festivals

Friday, September 18, 2009 - - 5 Comments

Gimchi
Festival

Foreigners are encouraged to try their luck at making the ubiquitous Korean staple at Gwangju's Gimchi Festival.

Farmers' Dance

At many festivals, villages from throughout the region send bands to a competition to see which is the most colorful and noisy.

Fun and Games

Neolttwigi, pictured here at the spring Dano festival, is Korea's version of the seesaw.

Village Parod
y

The Korean mask dance, where every stuffed shirt and village oddball is parodied, is a true folk tradition with roots in Korea's shamanistic past.

Festive Lanterns

Brightly colored lanterns fill the courtyard of a mountain temple during the week-long celebration of Buddha's birthday, Korea's most important Buddhist festival.

Alms Appreciation

Monks are no longer allowed to beg for alms on Korea's streets, so offering of rice, fruit and money, as at the Buddha's birthday festival, are much appreciated.

Mask Festival

A young boy is dwarfed by masks at the Andong International Mask Festival. Korea's best dance groups make this one of the country's liveliest festivals.

Taking in the Show

No one loves a festival like Korea's senior citizens, who put on their finest clothes, pack a lunch and stock up on soju for a day of merry-making.
