Palace Guards
Guards at the Deoksugung Palace in Seoul wear long, plain robes and broad-rimmed hats as they beat time with brightly decorated drums.
Modern Hanbok
The bright jacket, jeogori, tiedwith an ornamental bow to the right, contrasts with the darkest skirt, chima, in this modern version of the hanbok.
Birthday Party
Dressed in a traditional stripe-sleeved silk coat, this child marks his first birthday by choosing an object that foretells his future. Money or rice suggest riches.
Ancestors Worship
A Confucian ceremony at Jongmyo shrine in honor of royal ancestors. 'Courtiers' wear black silk hats and round-necked robes.
Shaman Rites
The shaman is an enduring feature Korean society. A shaman's assistant wears a hood bearing tri-colored taegeuk symbols.
Working Clothes
In contrast to the flowing lines of formal hanbok, modern working clothes are designed for ease of movement and comfort.
Wedding Clothes
At a traditional wedding, the bride wears red silk embellished with gold leaf; the groom has an embroidered jacket and silk trousers.
Flowing Lines
Hanbok with tapering sleeves and high-waisted skirt makes for a flowing silhouette.
