Korea's Beautiful Mountain Temples
Saturday, September 26, 2009 - Labels: korea's Provincial and National Parks, Korean Temple - 1 Comments
While the urban centers have their attractions, a visit to Korea would be incomplete without experiencing the peace of these rustic hideaways.
Korea's largest and most historic Buddhist temples are found in mountain valleys far removed from the hectic urban centers. Many of Korea's artistic treasures are to be found within the temple grounds, although the greatest treasure may be the beauty of the temples and their pristine natural setting. These mountain shrines and their grounds have become the centerpieces of Korea's well-developed system of Provincial and National Parks, from Jirisan in the south to Seokraksan in the north.
It is not happenstance that the temples are located in beautiful mountain locations. For most of the staunchly Confucian Joseon dynasty (1392-1910) Buddhist temples, and even monks, mountains were their refuge. Today, these temples in the hills provide visitors with a quiet opportunity to calm, refresh and renew their spiritual side.
