The Amazing Dobongsan

Friday, November 13, 2009 - - 1 Comments

Dobongsan, (740 meters/2,428 ft), is one of several pleasant peaks just a few miles north of downtown Seoul. The hike to the summit takes several hours. You may want to linger en route next to a clear stream or, if you are a camera buff, photograph the many odd rock formations; or you may wish to trek along one of the meandering paths leading to the picturesque Buddhist temples of Mangwol, Cheonchuk, and Hweryong.

Dobongsan lies within one of Korea's 20 national parks - Bukhansan National Park. Further south from Dobongsan there is a triad of granite mountains, Samgaksan (triangle peaks) which is better known as Bukhansan. The tallest of these, at 837 meters (2,746 ft.) is Baegundae, from whose ridges you can catch some great views of Seoul. Another peak, Insubong (812 meters/2,644 feet), has a sheer granite face that many have compared to the better known El Capitan in Califonia's Yosemite National Park. Like its California counterpart, Insubong is popular with technical climbers. Bukhansan National Park is a legitimate alpine environment, even if it is surrounded by a sea of concrete apartment buildings, so if you decide to do some hiking, take plenty of water and warm clothes.
