Plum Blossoms in the snow
Monday, November 9, 2009 - Labels: Dobongsan, plum blossoms, Suraksan - 1 Comments
Visitors and Seoulites alike are often told that they should spend at least one late winter day in the area north of Seoul. This region is dubbed by some as the "Realm of the Immortals." If possible, try to go when plum blossoms - the year's first flower - begin to bloom in snow-dusted forests and ravines. It is, after all, what the ancients advise: "Do as amused immortals do: whenever the boredom and frustration of a long winter indoors becomes too much for them, they put on their cape and hat, tell the attendant to saddle the donkey, and go out in the snow looking for plum blossoms."
This "immortal" journey will take you on Highway 43 north of Seoul between two popular hiking mountains: Dobongsan and Suraksan. Dobongsan, the rocky harsh-looking mountain on the west side of the road, is said to represent the male gender, while the curved and flowing Surkasan on the east side is supposed to personify the female qualities.
