The Hidden Beauty of the Tomb
Thursday, November 19, 2009 - Labels: Gwangneung, King Sejo, Queen Yun Jeonghi - 0 Comments
A short detour from the main road leading back to the capital leads to the impressive Confucian-style burial tombs of King Sejo (1456-1468), the 7th Joseon King, and his wife, Queen Yun Jeonghi. Known as Gwangneung (open Tues-Sun p:30am-5:30pm, Nov-Mar closes at 4:30pm; entrace fee), these are probably the most idyllically located tombs in the Seoul area, hidden in the midst of a beautiful forest of old trees which shade melodious, trickling streams and wide greens ideal for picnicking. The surrounding woodland is very popular with bridwatchers, being a prime habitat for Tristram's Woodpeckers and other rare species.
