The Dragon Waterfall and the Feisty Carp
Monday, November 16, 2009 - Labels: Sambuyeon - 0 Comments
Due south of the Lonely Rock - in a deep canyon and off a steep dirt road - is the little known Sambuyeon or "Dragon Waterfall". You'll probably see local villagers fishing for carp in pools above the falls. This is appropriate pastime, because in these parts - and in oriental mythology in general - the carp and the dragon are distant and legendary relatives. A famous story in natural lore tells about a carp (regarded by Koreans as a symbol of strength and perseverance) that persistently tried to climb up this strong waterfall. On the 100th day of his attempt, this feisty carp succeeded (with the help of the gods) to scale Sambuyeon, and as a reward he was magically turned into a powerful dragon. These falls, however, are rather easy to climb (a well-trodden path runs through a stone tunnel to the right side of the falls; and of course there is little worry of being turned into a dragon at the top.
